Mobile Industrial Robots:Breakthroughs in eradicating intralogistics bottlenecks require continuous technological innovation

On behalf of MiR, Will Dong, Sales Director of China, delivered a keynote speech which covered plants’ internal logistics, and shared frontier trends with industry insiders. Logistics bottlenecks within plants is one of biggest focuses of attention currently, due to intense global competition and shrinking demographic dividends that have forced manufacturers to consistently seek to transform and deepen automated production. Today, plants’ intralogistics and transportation still mainly rely on manpower, which is time-consuming, inefficient and to a large extent, limits the automation journey for numerous manufacturers. Furthermore, as consumer demand gradually reveals the major trends of diversification and personalization, flexible production with small-batch, multi-variety and customized traits, is being initiated as a new direction for future development. This will put the spotlight on the flexibility and leanness of manufacturing, and will therefore show that traditional automated guided vehicles (AGV) technology now lacks competitiveness.

Many manufacturers are hesitant to apply AGV technology. It comes with high implementation costs, and workshop layouts need to be adjusted. Some have big concerns, spanning from physical production to costs, and expect to achieve a mixed production mode with less batch and diversification at lower costs, while realizing the dynamic production line layout at the same time. However, autonomous mobile robots (AMR) are very flexible, safe and reliable, and offer a high degree of collaborative potential between people and machines. Simultaneously, installation is quick and will not affect daily production. AMRs also have low maintenance requirements and result in low operating costs. Numerous manufacturers are increasingly turning to AMRs as a solution for boosting their internal logistics.

In contrast to AGV technology, which can only obey simple programming instructions and automatically ceases if it encounters obstacles in the running process, AMRs are more flexible, and can quickly figure out an optimal route to the desired destination, as well as neatly bypass obstacles to ensure the punctual delivery of materials, which reduces waiting time.
